Review:-
Having only just got into Counting Crows myself, I can't compare this to any other shows. But from I have heard is they always play a mixture of accoustic & electric versions of their songs. Thursday nights show was no exception, even though singer Adam Duritz told us they were leaning more to the accoustic side on this tour. So the show was split into accoustic versions of old favourites, covers of songs from unknown bands (4 white stallions & wiseblood). Three songs in and we're hitting Mr. Jones, but not the beer-fuelled stagger which was the band's first single. This is a more considered rendition climbing to a storming finish.
Where Counting Crows exel is with epics like Omagh, Goodnight LA and Anna Begins. There was even a suprise as us locals in Manchester recognised the first verse of the Oasis song Live Forever, before Duritz launched into Long December.
This however is not a one man show. The singer is backed by six fine musicians and, in particular guitarist David Immergluck got quite a few opportunities to show off, and an excellent guitarist he is too.
Until the closing notes of Long December things had been reasonably laid back, but then the pace changed with Miami, followed by a huge epic Round Here.
Duritz launched into Mrs. Potters Lullaby starting the first encore. Then the crows were joined by Gemma Hayes and her band for a raucous Hanging Around.
They even managed to return a second time with Holiday In Spain but Duritz having been suffering with a stomach ache all night admitted he was close to "vomiting". Now that would have been a spectacular rock & roll finish!.
